a device that is used to apply pressure, typically by compressing a limb with a cord or tight bandage to a limb or extremity, in order to stop the flow of blood through a vein or artery. It may be used in emergencies, in surgery, or in post-operative rehabilitation.

There are three types of tourniquets: surgical tourniquets, emergency tourniquets, and rehabilitation tourniquets.

Actor Jeremy Renner’s neighbor who happened to be a doctor has put a tourniquet on Jeremy’s leg to stem the bleeding.
